The two-level Engineering Room is a meld of a Galaxy class ship and an Intrepid class ship. Located on the floor level is the Chief Engineer's office, a Master Control Station, which could serve as a replacement bridge in emergency situations, and most monitoring stations. Throughout the second level are direct monitoring stations and auxiliary engine control stations. Small lifts are available to take up crew between those levels, along with ladders.

The rear half of Engineering is where the ship's two warp cores are located. The two cylindrical structures rise straight up from the floor deck to the ceiling. They glow blue and purple, with occasional flashes of white. Both cores provide more than enough power for the three warp nacelles and the Quantum Slipstream Drive.

In between the two warp cores is a large octagonal device with several dark cables snaking out from it. In the middle of the octagonal device is a large transparent sphere. Wild multicolored energy sparks within it. All around the blocky device are cylinders filled with iridescent blue liquid.

The Quantum Slipstream Drive (QSD) is the first of its kind in Starfleet, patterned after the Voyager's modified QSD, which in turn had been taken by an alien named Arturis in the Delta Quadrant.

When the Voyager first transmitted data about the QSD, Starfleet R&D seized upon the idea, and began developing it on their own. By the time the Voyager returned to Earth, Starfleet R&D understood the basics and had a prototype built. They were able to compare their prototype with the actual QSD installed on the Voyager. This led to the development of the hybrid QSD currently installed on the Courageous.

Due to the disparity between the level of computational power between current Starfleet computers and Arturis’s computers, it takes from several days to several weeks to compute the parameters needed to produce a stable Quantum Slipstream to take the ship to various locations. When not in use, the QSD is powered down, since it is an considerable drain on the ship’s power resources.
