The
U.S.S. Courageous houses two sickbays. The primary one is in
the saucer section, deck 12. Sickbay One. The Chief Medical Officers
office is located in Sickbay One. Sickbay One is pretty much the standard
kind of sickbay on all of our newer ships. Instead of splitting up Sickbay
One into two locations, like on a standard Galaxy class ship,
nearly all of Deck 12 is dedicated to it.
On the port side of
Sickbay One, four biobeds are set against the wall. Beyond the biobeds
is the CMOs office, similar to the office design for the Intrepid
class Sickbays. Two doors allow entry. The glass is equipped with adjustable
opaqueness, allowing for clear visiblity or privacy. In extreme cases,
the office can be turned into an sterile location.
On the starboard side
of the Sickbay, two surgical biobed stations, like the ones found on
Intrepid and Sovereign class Sickbays, were set inside
the walls. In various locations are freestanding medical dianostic consoles
and laboratory stations.
Just beyond the CMOs
Office is an open doorway leading to the Laboratory portion of the Sickbay,
housing the most advanced scientific and medical laboratory technology
available in Starfleet. The Laboratory is also used by the Science department,
when space is available.
Both Sickbays are equipped
with holoemitters, allowing the Emergency Medical Hologram to work in
both locations. The Prototype EMH Mark Three, scrapped by Starfleet
Medical, has been modified and put in use on the Courageous.
Its physical and part of its psychological parameters are based on Dr.
Edward Hartman.
Sickbay Two is located
in the stardrive section, near Engineering. It's approximately half
the size of Sickbay One, shaped in a rectangular layout. Sickbay Two's
primary purpose is to serve as a infirmary for the Marines stationed
on the Courageous. Sickbay Two is also designed to handle most
combat casualties. No laboratory equipments are present. Serious and
delicate surgery is not recommended in the secondary sickbay.
Six standard biobeds
line the long walls, three on each wall. Ameneties such as food replicators
and heads are not present, since Sickbay Two is not designed for long-term
usage. Forcefield emitters are not available either, so Sickbay Two
cannot be quarantinned effectively.
Since the ship is equipped
with an separating saucer, Sickbay Two has been outfitted with a modified
cargo transporter system, which allows for mass transport from Sickbay
Two to Sickbay One. Large reserves of powers are required, so special
emergency generators, dedicated solely to the transporter system, are
brought onto standby, ready to provide the power needed for emergencies.
However, the generators only hold enough power for one energization.
An extended period of time is needed to recharge- approximately 25 to
27 hours. This means that the Sickbay Two mass transporters are one-time
uses only.
